Skin

Skin is the biggest organ of the human body. It has characteristics and features which still baffles the medical profession today. Most commonly, plastic surgeons are asked about skin care and resurfacing treatments to improve the appearance and texture of the skin. To us, the most important aspect of skin care is cleansing, moisturising and sun protection. Resurfacing treatments are suitable for roughness, irregular texture, uneven pigmentation as well tightening of the skin.

Skin Cancers

A significant part of plastic surgery is also the treatment of skin cancers. Australia has one of the highest incidences of skin cancer in the world, related to its latitude, as well as the heritage of the Australian population. Skin cancer incidence has been shown to be associated with sun exposure.

Most of the damage to the skin is done during the early years of life while the lesions manifest later in life. Queensland itself, ironically well-known as the Sunshine State is one of the leading states nationally for the incidences of skin cancers and melanomas. It is recommended that if you have a history of skin cancers, you should have 6 monthly skin checks by either your GP or a dermatologist. You should also see your doctor if a new lesion or changes to a mole occurs.
